First published in 1978, this is the story of Charles Arrowby who, retiring from his glittering London world in order to abjure magic and become a hermit turns to the sea: turbulent and leaden, transparent and opaque, magician and mother. But he finds his solitude is peopled by the drama of his own fantasies and obsessions,

5Far too good for the Booker prize
By ziska
Iris Murdoch was an extraordinary writer and woman and this is an extraordinary book.Intricate detail and plot; Charles, who at first appears merely pompous and conceited, is soon obviously a monster. For me, this is balanced by the portrait of his amiable cousin James, who also has hidden depths; the incident of the tulpa will give you goosebumps.A glorious mix of characters, from banal to fascinating, tragic to complacent. Incidents varying from the everyday to the occult; dramatic to 'world of celebrity' but even the latter is never boring.I've been reading this book for years; I'm just re-reading it again as I've bought a replacement after my old copy fell to bits (I seem to be saying this a lot lately) but to me that's a test of a good book. Every time I revisit old scenes with pleasure and always discover some new aspect.Like another reviewer, I too feel cynical about Booker Prize hype; 'The Sea, The Sea' in my opinion, is far too good for the Booker. The only details I can't stomach are Charles's dreadful cooking ...

5The Past is Better Left
By puddleglum
Charles, a theatre impressario, retires to a quaint and quirky cottage by the sea to escape from his previous lifestyle. He reflects on his first love, Hartley, from his teens and longs to return to the romance with this girl. The story becomes alive with this reflection and then projects into unputdownable reading when he finds that Hartley, now married, and possibly unhappily so, lives in the village. Iris brings to life the sea and powerful characters in this story, but for me it was the empathy it generated. Surely, I am not alone in dwelling on that first ever romance we experience, the one that haunts for the rest of our lives, and which pulls at the strings of 'what if' as long as we live? The premise of Iris's story is that these thing are best left in the past and attempting to rekindle them will lead to disaster. She is probably right, but we all like to dream don't we? An unforgettable story, quite beautifully told.

5Beautifully Written
By Mrs. Jane H. Parker
Iris Murdoch writes with such sharp clarity regarding the characters in her books; peeling them down to their bones, hiding none of their flaws and yet making the reader want to read on even when an individual disgusts one's senses. I first read this novel when I was 25 and nearly 40 years later I enjoyed it more than the first time. Some books/authors need the reader to have "lived" to appreciate them. I always wondered why we had to trawl through "turgid" novels at school when we only truly appreciated them years later. The Sea, the Sea is a powerful novel dealing with the vanities and flaws of each character quite cruelly at times but also with love for their fraility and the fraility of all of us. The dramatic setting is beautifully described, you can smell the Sea!
